State-of-the-Art Mass Spectrometer Acquired

Research Scientist Jon Karty and former IU Chemistry Professor Erin Carlson were recently awarded funding from the Indiana Metabolomics and Cytomics Initiative (METACyt) to acquire a Waters Synapt G2-S mass spectrometer. This state-of-the-art hybrid IMS-MS-MS instrument expands the mass spectrometry capabilities available to IUB researchers by introducing a new platform that can handle high-throughput, high-resolution LC-MS/MS interrogation of low abundance species in extremely complex mixtures.

One of the major advantages of the Synapt G2 is its superior selectivity compared to other technologies due to the TriWave ion mobility cell that separates ions by their three-dimensional structure in addition to the mass separation afforded by the time-of-flight mass analyzer. Furthermore, it is capable of data independent tandem mass spectrometry.

These two traits make the Synapt G2-S a superior tool for discovery in small molecule and macromolecule analysis. METACyt is funded by the Lilly Endowment, Inc. and the Indiana Life Sciences Initiative.
