Welcome to the Indiana University Bloomington Chemistry Peer Mentor program. On this page you will find opportunities to obtain support from second semester Junior or Senior students who have volunteered to share their experiences to help you succeed.

While they are not official IU academic advisors and should not be viewed as such, peer mentors are available for informal, in-person discussion on a variety of topics such as work experience, study abroad, shadowing professionals, graduate school applications, graduate school entry exams, course load, undergraduate research, and study strategies.

Please see below for peer mentor details, their related experience and their availability. All mentoring meetings will take place in the Sciences Library on the ground floor of the Chemistry building in room 002S near the front entrance, or at a main study desk. Look out for 'Peer Mentor' signs. https://libraries.indiana.edu/sciences-library.

Crystal

Hi all! My name is Crystal and I’m a first-gen junior majoring in Chemistry. I plan to get a Ph.D. and go into either research or industry. I’ve been a C116 UTIN, C127 UTA, and I do undergraduate research in the BEAMS lab. I’ve done summer research through a chemistry department scholarship and will be doing research in Colorado this upcoming summer. Stop by to chat about whatever you’d like; I’d love to help in any way I can.

Mentoring Hours: Monday 11:20 am - 12:20 pm and Tuesday 11am - 12 pm in the Chemistry Library.

Emily

Hi! My name is Emily, and I am a senior majoring in chemistry with a pre-med focus. I have completed one application cycle for medical school, which involved taking the MCAT, securing recommendation letters, and crafting my personal statement. My experience extends beyond the classroom, including research in both biology and neuroscience labs here at IU, working as a UTIN and chemistry tutor, clinical shadowing, and a pre-med internship with UNICEF in Switzerland. I understand that pursuing a science degree can be both demanding and overwhelming. My goal is to support you by sharing effective study strategies, fostering a growth mindset, and providing valuable resources to help you navigate these challenges and succeed in your academic journey. I am here for you!

Mentoring Hours: Wednesday 10:30 am - 11.30 am and Friday 1 pm - 2 pm in the Chemistry Library.

Fiyinfolowa

My name is Fiyinfoluwa. I am Nigerian and I'm a junior studying neuroscience and Spanish with a minor in chemistry. I plan on going to med school to become a psychiatrist. I am on the eboard for a Christian fellowship on campus. I'm also a UTA for biology L112 so I can answer any bio questions you have. I also love navigating schedules on IGPS so I can be your peer mentor!

Mentoring Hours: Wednesday from 3:30-5:30pm in the Chemistry Library.

Grant

My name is Grant and I am a senior majoring in neuroscience and I also have minors in Biology and Social Sciences and Medicine. After graduation I’m planning on taking a gap year before going to medical school in Fall of 2026. I have taken the MCAT twice before so I have a lot of experience with studying and preparing for that. I have been a UTA for BIOL-L112 for four semesters and because of this I have learned a lot about giving advice to students about how to study, expectations for the class, and how to prepare for future classes. I also work in the IU Health Bloomington Emergency room as a Patient Care Tech which has given me a lot of good hands-on experience in the medical field. The biggest piece of advice I can give is make sure you are sticking to a schedule with your schoolwork, but also remember to take a break and have fun sometimes. Burnout is a major issue for pre-professional students, and this is the best way to avoid it in my opinion. I am looking forward to helping every student I can in any way possible!

Mentoring Hours: Tuesday 11:30 am -12:30 pm and Friday 11:30am - 12:30 pm in the Chemistry Library.

Lauren

My name is Lauren, and I am a senior majoring in biology and Spanish with a minor in chemistry. I am on a pre-medical track, and at this stage in my journey, I have taken the MCAT and am currently in the interviewing process with medical schools. After medical school I want to match into a residency in surgery, and I hope that my experiences with the Spanish language and Latino populations will allow me to practice medicine in both English and Spanish. In my time at IU, I have been involved with many extracurriculars such as being a UTIN, joining Phi Delta Epsilon (pre-medical fraternity), working in a research lab, and much more! My variety of experiences has given me many perspectives on being a student at IU, so I hope my reflections on my time here are insightful, and I can't wait to meet you all soon.

Mentoring Hours: Wednesday 1:45 pm - 2:45 pm and Friday 11:30 am - 12:30 pm in the Chemistry Library.

Mackenna

My name is MacKenna, and I am a junior majoring in Biochemistry. After college, I plan to work in a forensic science lab, either at the local or state level. In high school, I shadowed at the crime lab of the Carmel, IN Police Department, and I plan to intern at the crime lab in Monroe County this summer. I am looking forward to working with you!

Mentoring Hours: Monday and Wednesday from 9 - 10 am in the Chemistry Library.

Madison

My name is Madison, and I am a senior majoring in Biology with minors in Chemistry and Psychology. In the future, I plan to go to medical school and train to become a physician. I am currently studying for the MCAT, and I will apply to schools this upcoming admissions cycle. In addition to classes, I work as a medical scribe, a virology research assistant, and a teaching intern. In the past, I have also worked as a certified nursing assistant. I am happy to discuss any of these experiences!

Mentoring Hours: Monday 1-2 pm and Tuesday 4-5 pm in the Chemistry Library.

Mary

Hi! I'm Mary, a Junior from Noblesville, Indiana, majoring in Neuroscience and minoring in African Languages. After graduation, I aim to take a gap year before applying to the joint MD/MBA program with IU and Kelley. My experiences include clinical shadowing, research, serving as a first aid provider with IC-EMS. I work as a Resident Assistant at Wells Quad, and a UTA for Prof Wood and Prof Reck's C341. I have previously been a UTIN for C342, after succeeding in C342 with Prof Mata over the summer. I have helped students become RAs, pass their chemistry courses, hone their writing skills and write killer applications.

Nika

Hello, my name is Nika, and I am a junior majoring in human biology. I am pursuing a career as a physician assistant and have been gaining valuable experience through shadowing at different hospitals. Shadowing has given me the opportunity to gain different perspectives on the daily responsibilities of the profession. Currently, I am an Undergraduate Teaching Assistant (UTA) for A225 (Human Anatomy), and I love helping my fellow peers. In addition to my academic involvement, I have served as a mentor in many programs, and I am excited to continue fostering a supportive learning environment for my classmates!

Mentoring Hours: Monday and Wednesday 11:30 am - 12:30 pm in the Chemistry Library.

Rachel

My name is Rachel, and I am a junior in the Hutton Honors College studying Neuroscience with a minor in Spanish. I have taken plenty of psychology classes, but I also have experience with a lot of chemistry/science courses having taken C117, C342, C343, P201, P202, BIOL112, BIOL113, and BIOL211. I’m on the pre-pharmacy track but also have insight into other pre-health pathways. I previously worked at Hutton to help incoming freshmen with course planning and degree requirements, so I would be happy to help with looking at degree progress or planning course load. Last summer, I studied abroad in Spain to complete my Spanish minor– I loved the experience and hope to help others to go abroad as well. Outside of academics, I work at Starbucks and am involved in a research lab in the psych department. I’m happy to share advice on work experience, getting into a research lab, and navigating pre-health programs!! My goal is to help be part of a support system to any student that feels lost or confused, as I was once felt the same at IU.
