The Ernest E. Campaigne Lectureship in Chemistry

The Ernest E. Campaigne Lectureship in Chemistry

The Ernest E. Campaigne Lectureship in Chemistry was established in 1988 as a result of donations by friends, colleagues and students of the late Professor Emeritus Campaigne. Under the auspices of this lectureship, an outstanding organic chemist is invited to present a lecture at Indiana University.

ERNEST E. CAMPAIGNE (1914-2013)
Dr. Campaigne earned his B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees at Northwestern University. He was later appointed as an Instructor at Indiana University in 1943. He became Professor of Chemistry in 1953, and during his years at Indiana University, he taught multiple chemistry courses. He also jointly taught classes in pharmacology. As a dedicated teacher and mentor, he sought to provide a superior educational experience to IU students in the classroom and in the laboratory. Philosophically, Ernest Campaigne was at the forefront of scientists of his generation who ardently believed that organic chemistry held the key to understanding the principles of biology and medicine. His active research programs in heterocyclic chemistry fueled his interest in medicinal chemistry and the development of new therapeutic agents. He authored more than 275 research papers and several textbooks. Among his research achievements are seminal reports of new antihistamines, anticonvulsants, and antitumor agents, as well as the structure-activity relationships of serotonin and its role in the chemistry of the brain. These endeavors led to fifteen patents, including the commercially successful antihistamine, Thenfadil. Professor Campaigne directed the dissertation research of nearly 60 Ph.D. and 20 M.S. degree candidates at Indiana University. His research programs were supported by the National Institutes of Health for nearly 35 consecutive years. Professor Campaigne devoted years of service to various functions of the American Chemical Society (ACS). He served as Councilor and subsequently as the Chair of the Division of Medicinal Chemistry of the ACS. Later, he became the first Chair of the newly created Section on Medicinal Chemistry, Division of Organic Chemistry of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry. He also served on the editorial boards of a number of international journals. He became Professor Emeritus in 1979. However, he continued to be an active member of the Department of Chemistry in his retirement years. In 1993, he was awarded the President’s Medal for Excellence in Teaching and Research at Indiana University. Professor Emeritus Campaigne passed away in 2013.
