Professor Michael VanNieuwenhze and Yves Brun (Professor of Biology) spoke at the Outstanding Faculty Collaborative Research Award and Lecture on Friday, December 12, at 3:30 PM.
Brun and VanNieuwenhze describe the development of a revolutionary method
for labeling the bacterial cell wall with fluorescent molecules that enables the
detection of zones of cell wall synthesis in live cells and in real time. Because the cell
wall is the most successful target for antibiotic intervention, improved understanding
of the mechanisms of cell wall synthesis will expedite development of new
antibacterial strategies.
