Electron Microscopy Center (EMC) Restart Plan

Only previously trained users may use EMC equipment

Training of new users is suspended until at least August 1 due to the requirement of maintaining six feet of physical distance between researchers.

Do not enter EMC facilities if you have experienced known COVID-19 symptoms

Do not enter EMC facilities if you have experienced known symptoms related to COVID-19 or have been in physical contact with other individuals exhibiting flu-like symptoms in the past 7 days. Please contact the EMC Director (Roger Innes, rinnes@indiana.edu)  if you get sick within 7 days after using EMC equipment.

Masks

Masks covering the mouth and nose are required at all times while inside EMC facilities.

New gloves should be put on upon entering EMC facilities, and prior to entering microscope rooms.

Boxes of gloves are provided outside each EMC microscope room. Dispose of gloves before leaving EMC facilities.

Prior to touching EMC equipment, users should consult the checklist associated with each for cleaning instructions.

Wear safety glasses or goggles

When using microscopes that have binocular eye pieces, wear safety glasses or goggles. This will prevent the spread of viruses via eye pieces.

Only one person in each EMC room at a time.

This is essential to adhere to the minimum of 6 feet of physical space between researchers.

When inside a microscope room, all users should flip the “Room in Use” doorknob tag to indicate that the microscope room is occupied. This will prevent others from walking in while the room is occupied. Leave the door open when you depart to promote air exchange.

When making iLab reservations, allow at least 30 minutes between users to allow air exchange in rooms between users, and reduce crowding in spaces outside microscope rooms.

Additional facility cleaning will be performed by EMC staff on a regular basis (at least twice per day). Do not attempt to clean microscope parts beyond the checklist. Using the wrong cleaning agents or methods can damage the equipment.

If a user needs assistance with a microscope problem, they should first use a phone or email to contact an EMC staff member to request assistance (rather than contact them in person):

  • David Morgan: 812-856-1457; dagmorga@indiana.edu
  • Barry Stein: 812-855-7424; bstein@indiana.edu
  • Xun Zhan: 812-855-4963; zhanxun@iu.edu

Consultations

Consultations with the EMC staff must occur first via Zoom using the posted Zoom address in the EMC (https://iu.zoom.us/j/94507242704).  Please bring a phone, tablet, or laptop computer for video-chats with staff.
