Exam Proctoring and Anonymous Portal Feedback

August 3, 2020

This message has the departmental recommendation on the choice of exam platforms suggested in the report sent by Dean Van Kooten last week, along with feedback to comments from the anonymous portal.

 Exam Proctoring

  • The report on proctoring virtual exams suggested either of two platforms, Respondus Monitor and Examity.  Because of significant problems and costs associated with Examity, we recommend Respondus Monitor. Martha Oakley, who served on the committee that prepared this report, can answer your questions about this platform and exam alternatives at the next faculty meeting, which will be held on 11 August. Again, please be aware that a full pivot to virtual instruction could take place, even early in the semester.  The webinar mentioned in the previous update described numerous different conditions that might trigger the pivot (https://broadcast.iu.edu/events/IU_webinar_2020-07-30.html).

Feedback on anonymous portal comments and other questions:

  1. If you continue to observe unsafe behavior in and adjacent to the department, which is considered research misconduct, you are encouraged to report specific incidents through the Office of Research Compliance, https://research.iu.edu/compliance/index.html. At the bottom of the page, there is a reporting link that will ultimately get you to this portal: https://secure.ethicspoint.com/domain/en/report_information.asp?clientid=17361&override=yes&agreement=no&companyname=Indiana%20University&violationtypeid=3345
  2. Stockroom, revisited:  To avoid close contact between shopper and staff, items are to be placed on a cart by the shopper and once Marcia scans all items she will push the cart into the hallway. The only thing that should be going under the Plexiglass is the sales ticket for each order.
  3. Testing for students who have returned from domestic travel:  The University does not have a policy on this matter, but given the current conditions across the US, it would be wise to take advantage of testing services through IU Health (see 30 July update for more information, https://www.chem.indiana.edu/category/chair-updates/)
  4. Eating-  We will be working to identify space and a safety protocol for eating in the building.  Note that all decisions about space in Simon Hall will need to involve a multi-departmental committee decision.
  5. PSIA = Public Safety and Institutional Assurance (https://protect.iu.edu/index.html)

Thanks for your feedback and cooperation as we safely continue with the research mission.
