Professor Richardson received a B.A. in Biophysics from Amherst College in 1960 and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Harvard University in 1966, where he did his thesis work under the direction of Prof. James D. Watson.  After postdoctoral work, first in Paris, France, then in Geneva, Switzerland, and finally in Seattle, Washington, he joined the Department of Chemistry in 1970 and was promoted to full professor in 1978.   His major research interest was on the mechanisms of transcription of RNA in bacterial cells.
