I decided to pursue research in biocatalysis and joined the Ph.D. program at Indiana University (IU) Chemistry where I work in Jared Lewis's lab. Since biocatalysis is an innovative blend of protein engineering, molecular biology, assay development, and organic synthesis, IU Chemistry attracted me a lot. The state-of-the-art research infrastructure at IU Chemistry is one of the finest for interdisciplinary work. Moreover, the research is bolstered by effective collaborations among faculties in synthetic chemistry and chemical biology. Being surrounded by researchers who are willing to think innovatively and collaborate to tackle scientific challenges has really motivated my intellectual growth and hone my leadership and academic skills. In addition, the presence of many international students in the department is representative of IU’s diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Frequent recruitment seminars from industries like Eli Lilly, Merck, Pfizer, Career Development Symposium, ChemGRC, Watanabe Symposium, Science Fest, etc. provide many opportunities for networking.

Both the fall and spring seasons at IU are picturesque. Bloomington is a super affordable vibrant town with a lot of greenery and eateries. The town offers different restaurants hosting diverse cuisines where one can eat out to their satisfaction. Moreover, it is just one hour away from Indianapolis and French Lick if one wants to hang out. The bus services provide great commutation, which is another attractive feature for international students like me. I enjoy weekend hiking and sightseeing at nearby forests and national parks. I am glad to call it my home for the next few years.
