Chemistry Placement Exam (CPE)
Students who enroll in Chemistry C117 are required to pass the Chemistry Placement Exam (CPE) with a score of 15 or higher or complete an on-line tutorial review course called ALEKS with 95% overall mastery. In addition, a math prerequisite is required to ensure that students are ready for the rigorous problem solving in C117.
Register for the CPE by clicking the grey button below. You will need to know your IU username, passphrase, and university ID number. Practice exams are also offered in the CPE course. Students are encouraged to refresh their chemistry knowledge through the practice exams before taking the actual exam.
Important CPE Deadlines: (deadline dates are inclusive)
June 1st for any Summer or Fall semester
December 1st for any Spring semester
ALEKS Online Course for C117 Preparation
ALEKS is Mandatory for students whose CPE score was 0-14 (You do not need to complete the ALEKS program if you have received a passing grade in C103.)
ALEKS is Strongly Recommended for students whose CPE score is 15-24. Instructors noted improvement in student preformance if the ALEKS course was completed prior to taking C117.
The deadline for completing ALEKS for enrollment in C117 for the Summer 2014 semester is Friday May 23rd at midnight. Students who do not meet the 95% total mastery requirement will be dropped from C117.
The deadline for completing ALEKS for enrollment in C117 for the Fall 2014 semester is Friday Aug. 8th at midnight. Students who do not meet the 95% total mastery requirement will be dropped from C117.
Total time required to complete the ALEKS course is about 20-40 hours and the cost is $30. Once you initiate the course, students have 11 weeks to attain the 95% total mastery. If your ALEKS license expires before the semester deadline, you will have to purchase a new license to finish.
