These requirements are based on those in the College of Arts and Sciences bulletin for students entering Summer 2004 and thereafter. Although every attempt has been made to ensure the accuracy of the degree information posted below, the official source of information regarding College of Arts and Sciences degree requirements is the College of Arts and Sciences web page and printed bulletins .
Degree Requirements
B.A. in Chemistry or Biochemistry
Fundamental Skills
- English Composition
- Intensive Writing
- Mathematics: must be completed with a C or better (will be fulfilled by the major)
- Foreign Language: (4th Semester Proficiency)
Distribution Requirements
- 1 Topics course (take College of Arts and Sciences E103, E104, or E105)
- 4 Arts & Humanities studies courses
- College of Arts and Sciences E103 will also count here if taken
- 4 Social & Historical studies courses
- College of Arts and Sciences E104 will also count here if taken
- 4 Natural & Mathematical sciences (fulfilled by the major)
- 2 Culture Studies courses
- 1 course not from dominant U.S.A. or modern Western Europe (list A)
- 1 additional culture studies course (list A or list B)
Major Requirements-B.A. Chemistry (must be C- or better)
- Overall GPA in major must be 2.00 or better
- 12 hours of the chemistry must be taken on the IUB campus
- 122 total hours required (36 at 300-400 level)
- 26 senior hours in residence
Special Honors Sections are indicated by the S prefix in the course numbers below
Purpose This major is designed for students planning to do work in other fields, including medicine, dentistry, law, optometry, and business. Students must complete the following course work with a minimum grade of C– in each course:
- C117 (or C105-C125), C341, C343, and C360 or C361 or C362
- Fourteen elective credit hours in chemistry. The following courses may not be used to fulfill the 27 credit hour requirement: C103, C107, G207, C240, G307, C371, C372, Y398, C400, C401, G407, C409, and G499
- Physics P201-P202
- Mathematics M119 or M211
Students must also complete the degree requirements for the B.A. degree in the College of Arts and Sciences.
Recommendations Mathematics M211 is strongly recommended, and M212 is highly desirable for students planning to work in many other fields.
4 year Sequence Map for BA Chemistry
Purpose This major is designed for students planning to attend medical or dental school, but who cannot meet all requirements for the B.S. in biochemistry and who do not plan to pursue graduate work or to seek employment in industry. Students must complete the following course work with a grade of C– or better in each course:
- C117 (or C105-C125), C341, C342, C343, C484, C485, and C487
- A minimum of 8 credit hours selected from the following: A314, A315, N330, C344, C360, C361, C362, C372, C430, C437, C460, C481
- Biology L112
- Mathematics M119 or M211
- Physics P201 or P221
Students must also complete the degree requirements for the B.A. degree in the College of Arts and Sciences.
Recommendations Mathematics M211 is strongly recommended, and M212 is highly desirable for students planning to work in other fields.
4 year Sequence Map for BA Biochemistry
B.S. in Chemistry
Purpose The B.S. in chemistry is designed to prepare students for graduate work and for jobs in industry as well as for medical and dental schools.
Requirements Students must complete the following fundamental skills and distribution requirements:

- Foreign Language: 3 Hours At 200 Level of any Foreign Language

- At least 6 of the remaining hours must be in lecture courses at the 400-level or above.
- At least 4 of the remaining hours must be in laboratory courses.
- Mathematics M211-M212, and M303, or M311, or M343.
- Physics P221-P222.
Students must also complete the requirements and procedures listed in the 2004-06 Bulletin under “General Requirements for Bachelor’s Degrees.”
Recommendations Mathematics M311 is recommended over Mathematics M303 or M343.
4 Year Sequence Map for BS Chemistry
B.S. in Biochemistry
Purpose The B.S. in biochemistry is designed for students planning to attend medical or dental school, to do graduate work in biochemistry, or to seek employment in industry.
