Majors and Programs

Indiana University offers five different courses of study for undergraduate students wishing to study chemistry. The Ph.D. program offers majors in the five traditional areas of chemistry as well as several interdisciplinary areas. The Chemistry Department also participates in numerous interdepartmental programs which are available for graduate studies.

Undergraduate Degrees

Well-qualified students who wish to acquire an unusually strong foundation in chemistry might be interested in the Chemistry Honors Program.

Graduate Degrees

The Department of Chemistry offers a Ph.D. in chemistry that is internationally well-respected in both industry and academia. Students may choose to focus on one of the following six specialized areas of chemistry or to pursue research projects spanning multiple areas.

You may choose to specialize in the traditional areas:

  • Analytical Chemistry
  • Biological Chemistry
  • Inorganic Chemistry
  • Materials Chemistry
  • Organic Chemistry
  • Physical Chemistry

In addition, Department of Chemistry faculty members participate in several interdepartmental programs.

Masters of Arts for Teaching in Chemistry degree

The Master of Arts for Teachers (MAT) Degree is designed to prepare individuals for teaching in secondary schools and community colleges, directing community outreach programs, corporate trainers, and laboratory directors just to name a few possible career paths. This program can be completed in a two-year full-time year-round program or in a four-year summer only program.
