Life in Bloomington
Shopping
To get a better sense of these locations, you might want to glance at a map of Bloomington. Like most towns, we have our fair share of malls and shopping centers. Some of the major shopping areas include:
Downtown or On the Square:
Located at the center of the city around the Courthouse, between 4th and 7th Streets (which run E/W) and College and Washington (which run N/S). A few of the gems you'll find downtown include Caveat Emptor (used books), The Game Preserve (games and puzzles), Howard's Bookstore (practically the sole remaining independently owned bookstore), and Optiks (glasses and vision care with funky window displays).
Kirkwood Avenue:
Located just west of campus where 5th Street (E/W) would be if the roads were numbered consistently. Kirkwood has many different restaurants and a few specialty clothing, stationary, and music shops.
College Mall:
Located east of campus at the intersection of 3rd Street (E/W) and College Mall Road (N/S). This is perhaps the largest shopping area in town. Besides small specialty shops, College Mall houses Sears, L. S. Ayres, and a Target store.
Jackson Creek Shopping Center:
Located south of College Mall on College Mall Road (N/S). The main attractions at this spot are Kroger, Hobby Lobby, and ShowPlace East.
Wal-Mart and Sam's Club:
Located a few minutes' drive west of town on State Route 45. Just like everywhere else in the country.
West Side Shopping:
Follow 3rd Street, over the highway, to the west side of town. The West side has grown by leaps and bounds of the last few years. Kmart, Big Lots, Office Depot, TJ Maxx, Kohls, Bed Bath and Beyond, Lowe's, and many other stores can be found in the shopping strips.
Bloomington also has a wide variety of grocery stores including:
- Bloomingfoods Market & Deli (Coop) -- 419 E Kirkwood and 3220 E 3rd Street
- Faris Bros. Meat Market -- 208 N Walnut
- Kroger -- Jackson Creek Plaza and Seminary Square and 500 Welmir Road
- Marsh Supermarkets -- 1825 Kinser Pike and 2424 S Walnut and 3516 W 3rd Street
- Mr. O'Malia's Food Markets -- 512 S College Mall Road
- Sahara Mart -- 106 E 2nd
