Graduate Programs
Master of Arts for Teachers (MAT) Degree
The Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) Chemistry is designed to prepare individuals for teaching in secondary schools and community colleges,
directing community outreach programs, corporate trainers, and laboratory directors just to name a few possible career paths. This program can
be completed in a two-year full-time year-round program or in a four-year summer only program.
Since the primary career for graduates of the M.A.T. program is teaching in secondary schools, the program is designed to: (1) permit a
secondary school teacher with minimum training in chemistry to achieve certification for the teaching major in chemistry in the secondary school;
(2) allow teachers already holding certification in chemistry to strengthen their training by taking advanced lecture and laboratory work in
chemistry; or (3) grant students with B.A. or B.S. degrees in chemistry, but with no education courses, to complete requirements for a secondary
Indiana teaching certificate and strengthen their chemistry training.
Admission Requirements
Applicants to the M.A.T. programs are expected to have eighteen (18) credit hours of chemistry, including one semester each of general and
organic chemistry. Deficiencies must be removed without graduate credit. Continuance in the program will depend upon an evaluation of the
student’s progress by the M.A.T. Advisory Committee within the first year.
Financial Support
The Department of Chemistry believes in supporting our graduate students financially and offers teaching assistantships/tuition waivers.
Degree Requirements
The M.A.T. is designed in consultation with the M.A.T. advisory committee to meet the needs and career goals of individual M.A.T. candidates.
The degree requires completion of a total of 36 credit hours:
- A minimum of 20 credit hours must be in graduate or advanced undergraduate courses in chemistry listed in the graduate bulletin;
- a maximum of 6 credit hours of undergraduate courses not listed in the graduate bulletin may be applied toward the M.A.T. degree;
- twelve (12) credit hours of lectures (6 credit hours in one of the five chemical disciplines and 3 credit hours in each of two of the
remaining four;
- six (6) credit hours chosen so that the student's total background in advanced laboratory courses will include credit in
three different fields. A research experience in an IUB faculty laboratory may be counted for one of these courses;
- completion of a final examination (either oral or written or both);
- participation in teaching and outreach programs in the department;
- a student completing the requirements for the M.A.T. degree in chemistry must also have met the requirements for certification for a
